Leonard Cohen, Famous Blue Raincoat
I think most people think of Leonard Cohen as a writer first and musician second. Sure, he’s a poet as well as a songwriter, and his lyrics are freakin’ devine - I’ll give you that. But let’s not forget that the man composes some beautiful music. Take this song for example. Listen to that subtle chorus of da-dah-da-da-daaah’s right when he gets to the part about her raincoat being torn at the shoulder. That’s the kind of thing that you might not even notice on first listen, but it adds so much. The da-da’s show up once more, but then there’s a different background bit later in the song. Listen for it and see if you catch it. It makes the song.
