Eels, PS: You Rock My World
This has been a really fun experiment from oneweekoneband. It got me thinking about my favorite closing track (as I dreamed about being tumblr-approved enough to be invited to do a oneweekoneband entry). I had it narrowed down to five or six choices, but I really didn’t expect Hendrick to go ahead and choose one of my candidates as his own. Good to know that someone else appreciates the genius of this album and this song. The one thing that I will add to Hendrik’s post is that while this song certainly stands on its own, it’s only after listening to Electro-Shock Blues in its entirety that this song can make you break down in tears. And that’s the sign of a great closing track, folks. I’ve mentioned ESB a couple times on this blog, and I still need to get around to writing about it extensively here. But it’s almost like explaining why you love a person. It’s intimidating as hell.
Final track from “Electro-Shock Blues” (1998)
And that’s it for our first ever theme week. I hope you enjoyed hearing about people’s favourite closing tracks. Apologies for the mass of posts today, there’s been a couple late entries and re-workings.
Obviously, this has been very much an incomplete and non-definitive snap shot. I definitely struggled at picking just one song to write about; other tracks I considered included Suede’s Still Life, Jets to Brazil’s Rocket Boy, The Wild Swans’ The Worst Year of My Life, Explosion in the Sky’s Your Hand in Mine, Pet Shop Boys’ King’s Cross, Okkervil River’s Seas Too Far To Reach and Scott Walker’s If You Go Away.

It’s been an incredibly exciting 2011 for this blog and I hope we’ll keep having so many great discussions and, most importantly, fun when talking about the music that’s dear to us in the new year.
I don’t know where we’re going
I don’t know what we’ll do
Laying in bed tonight I was thinking
And listening to all the dogs / and the sirens and the shots
And how a careful man tries / to dodge the bullets
While a happy man takes a walk
And maybe it’s time
to live
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this week and, as always, thank you for reading.
Have a very, very happy 2012!
