Oh wow. I have most of these tracks floating around my iTunes library, but how terrific is it to finally have them as a cohesive album? Jordan’s covers of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ and the Misfits’ ‘Astro Zombies’ remain two of my favorite covers of all time. Also, there was a saddish point in my life where I would put ‘And It Pours’ on repeat and just wallow in that song and it felt terrific. Still worth a wallow.

And ‘Judy’ will go down as one of my favorite Columbia, SC songs ever. One of those songs that not only was by a local artist and friend, but that actually evokes times, places, and faces. And all the faces are singing along.

So um yeah. Go download it with my highest possible recommendation.

Jordan Blackmon is one-third of the guts and body of Fork & Spoon Records. He helps make sure we are doing things we can be proud of and are doing them the right way, and also does all of the Casual Friday drawings. He also makes really amazing songs under the name Pussy Wizard. A long time before Pussy Wizard, he made beautiful songs under the name Brave Horatius. In high school/college, a lot of us spend a lot of time playing and recording these songs in various forms with Jordan (though he was never fully satisfied with the results) as each and every new Brave Horatius song became our new favorite song.

I’m really glad a lot of these recordings are finally housed in a “complete” collection. It’s a perfect introduction to the roots of Pussy Wizard (and another step closer to me not having to burn so many people copies of my old CD-r’s that my friends put out that are still good).

Oh no. Now I’ve gone down the internet rabbit hole of Bob’s Burgers songs, and apparently The National covered Linda’s “Thanksgiving Song.” How did I miss this? I’ll admit Linda’s version is catchier. Maybe Matt Berninger’s ironically singing from the perspective of the doomed turkey.

The elusive ~~Swedish~~ Scottish electropop outfit responsible for one of my favorite pop singles of 2012, The Mother We Share, has finally released a new song through Pitchfork. Their debut EP, Recover, is set to drop March 25th in the UK on Virgin Records and March 26th in the US on Glassnote.

“Every time that I’d be standing there on stage, at least at some point in the show, I had to just pinch myself to realize that I was really up there on the stage. Every one of these guys was my hero before I even knew them, you know? Because really, the first time I ever heard Waylon [Jennings], I was a janitor at the recording studio at Columbia Recording in Nashville. And I volunteered to do a Saturday [cleaning shift] when Waylon was doing a demo, and I’d never heard anything like him. It was a real eye-opener to find myself on the same stage with these guys. Because Johnny Cash, as human as he is — or was — he was always larger than life. He always felt like something right off of Mount Rushmore.”
